Unveiling the origin of the highest energy particles in the Universe

One of the leading candidates for the production of the highest energy particles in the universe are blazars, i.e. a class of galaxies with relativistic jets emerging from supermassive black holes. Yet, there is no reliable theory built from first principles for the mechanism that transfers the jet energy to the highest energy particles. Thus, the properties of the accelerated particles are usually inferred by fitting the observed blazar emission, while additional constraints may be placed from recent high-energy neutrino observations. Thanks to the recent development of particle-in-cell codes and the growth of computing power, a first-principle study of particle acceleration in blazar jet becomes now possible
